When we received an enquiry from a Midlands-based, specialist alloy wheels business for a wheel balancer, we were immediately intrigued by the very specific nature of the request.

Driftworks in Birmingham were struggling to balance certain types of rims due to the negative offset design, which meant the rim was effectively pushed further out than is typical. The consequence is that it can physically cause problems with the rim fitting onto their existing wheel balancing machine, but also potentially hamper the ability to enter data correctly and position the weights in the right place.

Whilst we fully understood the issues they were facing, and have had lots of experience with this design of rim from a tyre fitting and removal perspective, we felt that the only way to really answer the question was to put it to the test. So we loaded up an additional wheel balancer and visited the site the next day en-route back from another installation. After balancing several rims with consistent results, including an 11J Ferrari rim with a particularly deep ‘well’, the customer decided that the Balco SL10 we had taken along was just the right machine for their needs, and so we left the customer up and running there and then.
